The constraint that decides it
Eddie AI is a cloud product. Your rushes go to a server, get indexed and analysed there, and a rough cut comes back. For a lot of work that is completely fine, and the convenience is real.
For a lot of other work it is a non-starter, and no feature comparison changes that:
- Client contracts and NDAs that name approved processors, or forbid third-party storage outright.
- Corporate and legal footage that is not permitted to leave the internal network at all.
- Weddings, medical, and anything with identifiable people who consented to you filming them, not to a vendor holding the files.
- Volume. A single event shoot can be hundreds of gigabytes; uploading it is often slower than the edit.
What "local" means here, precisely
Reelary downloads a vision model once, then never needs the network again. Indexing, embedding, search, timeline assembly, captioning, voice-over and export all run on your CPU/GPU. The vector index sits in a folder on your disk next to the footage. You can pull the ethernet cable and unplug the Wi-Fi, and every feature still works.
There is no account to sign in to inside the app and no telemetry. The website exists to sell you a license key; the application does not need it to index or search.
What you give up, and what you get
Honestly: a cloud service can throw far more compute at a single job than your laptop can, and Eddie's story-shaping is more opinionated than Reelary's script-driven assembly. If you are cutting a long-form narrative from unstructured rushes and you can upload, that is a genuine advantage.
What you get instead:
- Footage that never leaves the room, which is sometimes the entire requirement.
- A one-time price rather than a recurring one - no per-seat, per-minute or per-project meter.
- An archive that stays searchable forever, including after you stop paying anyone.
