Add caption to GIF
Put a caption on any GIF in seconds: the white caption bar on top, classic meme text, or subtitles along the bottom. Type, watch the preview, download. Free, no watermark, and the GIF never leaves your browser.
Your GIF is decoded, captioned and encoded by this browser tab and never sent anywhere. There is no AI model to download, so it starts instantly.
How to add a caption to a GIF
- Drop a GIF into the box, or click it to choose one. A short video clip works too.
- Type the caption. For meme text, fill in the top and bottom lines separately.
- Pick a style, and if you want a smaller file, a narrower width. The preview updates as you type.
- Click Make GIF, check the result, and download it.
Three caption styles
- Caption bar above. A white strip on top of the GIF with black text. It never covers the action, which is why it became the standard look for reaction GIFs.
- Meme text. White capitals with a black outline, at the top and the bottom of the picture, in the style of the classic Impact meme. The text shrinks to fit when it runs long.
- Subtitle. White outlined text along the bottom, for a GIF that quotes a line of dialogue.
The bold condensed typeface is Anton, an open-licence font in the Impact style that is served from this site, so the caption looks the same on Windows, Mac, Android and iPhone.
Why the GIF never leaves your browser
Most GIF caption makers upload the file, edit it on a server and send it back, often with a watermark or a sign-up wall. This one does the work in the page. It unpacks every frame of the GIF, including the partial frames and disposal rules many GIFs use to save space, draws your caption on each one, and re-encodes the animation with a fresh 256-colour palette per frame so the picture does not band. Frame timing is kept as it was.
Keeping the file small
- Use the 480 px or 320 px width. Halving the width cuts the file to roughly a quarter.
- Trim long clips before you drop them in. A 3 to 6 second loop is the sweet spot for reactions.
- Busy, grainy footage makes heavier GIFs than flat animation. If the file is still too large for a chat app, share it as a short MP4 instead.
When the desktop app is the better tool
A good reaction GIF starts with finding the right two seconds, and in a big folder of footage that is the slow part. The Reelary desktop app indexes your own videos on your computer so you can search them by describing the moment ("dog jumping into a lake", "someone laughing at a desk") or by a line someone said, and jump straight to it.
To pull stills instead of an animation, use the free frame extractor; to caption a whole video with speech, use the caption generator.
The desktop app finds the exact moment in your own footage by describing it, which is where the best reaction clips come from. Reelary is free to download for Mac and Windows; indexing and search have no file limit.
Questions
How do I add a caption to a GIF?
Drop the GIF into the box above, type your caption and pick a style. The preview plays with the caption on it. Click "Make GIF", then download the result. The whole thing usually takes a few seconds.
Is it free, and is there a watermark?
It is free with no watermark and no account. The GIF is edited by your own browser, so there is no server cost to recover.
Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?
No. The file is decoded, captioned and re-encoded inside this browser tab. Nothing is sent to a server, and the tool keeps working with the internet switched off once the page has loaded.
How do I make the white caption bar on top of a GIF?
Choose the "Caption bar above" style. It adds a white strip above the animation with your text in black, the format used for reaction GIFs on Reddit, iFunny and Twitter. The bar grows to fit longer captions.
Can I add text to a video clip and turn it into a GIF?
Yes. Drop an MP4, MOV or WebM clip of up to 20 seconds instead of a GIF. It is converted at 12 frames per second and up to 640 pixels wide, then captioned like any GIF.
Why is my GIF file bigger than the original?
Each frame is re-encoded with its own 256-colour palette, and a caption bar adds pixels. Choose a smaller width to cut the size; 480 pixels wide is plenty for most chats and forums.
Does it keep transparent backgrounds?
Yes. Transparent GIFs such as stickers keep their transparent background. Only the caption bar itself, if you choose that style, is solid white.
